“Make-up can only make you look pretty on the outside but it doesn’t help if you’re ugly on the inside. Unless you eat the make-up.” Audrey Hepburn

I love this little quip. I love how Audrey points out the silliness of relying on your appearance to convey your value. What’s even better is that she, epitome of style that she was, utilized the power of presenting oneself well without letting it dictate her identity.

There is a place for discussions of style and beauty and tips and tricks and all the little things. I’ve always been fascinated by those short quizzes that help you “find your true style”. I love blog posts that tell me how to get the best eyebrows for my face shape. Which, as a side note, I have now decided leave to the professionals due to a few tragic “Oh where are my eyebrows?” incidents. The process of developing my style excites me — it’s like solving a puzzle. I thought it’d be fun to share my favorite beauty products with you and talk about why I like them and how they fit with my style. Yay! Let’s chat!

First off, glowy nails with Dior’s Nail Glow. I first read about this nail polish on A Cup of Jo and was intrigued. You see, all my life I’ve watched my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother take great care of their hands. My sweet great-grandmother, Poofie, was known for picking the palest of pinks every time she had her nails done because she loved the subtlety of it. When I bought my first bottle of this nail polish, we all loved how it looked so much. I remember taking it over to Poofie’s and watching my little sister paint her nails with this sheer pink. Poof loved how it made her nails look healthy and rosy. I think I love it for the same reasons, but also because she loved it. The rosy hint of color makes my nails look brighter, my skin look healthier and all of me just a little bit classier.

An even complexion is important to me because I’ve always struggled with acne and general redness on my face. However, I don’t want people to know I have on makeup, and have always feared looking cakey. I’ve experimented with many BB creams before, but this one from YSL is my favorite. I like how it works into the skin, matches any skin tone (it’s magical) and almost hides away — you wouldn’t know you were wearing it. My favorite thing is that it smells wonderful. I was so used to makeup smelling awful, and so pleasantly surprised when I found this one smelled so good.

I love having a bit of color on my lips, it brightens up my face and makes me feel like I can conquer the world. Cliche? Yes, but so true. For everyday wear, I love this one from Fresh and this one from Jane Iredale (in Forever Pink). The first is a brighter reddish color without being overwhelming (and it has SPF 15!). The second is a lip stain and man is it wonderful. It changes to match your skin tone and it looks good on everyone (oops sometimes I share lipstick with girl friends). My grandmother gave it to me as a gift, and she was right, it adds just the right touch. My makeup style tends to be pretty low-key, except for lips. I love a pop of lip! It’s so classy, so Audrey Hepburn.

Subtle, but defined eyes (and no winged eyeliner nonsense) with this three-dot eyeliner from Clarins. I usually dot this across my top lash line, and I love that you can’t tell I’m wearing eyeliner. While walking through Nordstrom one afternoon I stumbled across this and was so excited to try it — it’s genius.

Natural eyebrows with this miracle stuff from Eyeko. Even though I get my eyebrows threaded every month, I still like to fill-in and shape them in the mornings. I’ve tried, pencil, powder and even gel and hated all of it because my eyebrows looked unnaturally sculpted. But this “brow boost” fills in my eyebrows without making them look drawn on. Blessings upon whoever invented this product!

There it is, a list of my favorite beauty products. Have you tried any of those? Let me know in the comments, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

P.S. Thanks for embarking on this new sort of writing-adventure with me. I'm trying to branch out and try new topics, I hope you enjoyed this attempt. :)
